KENYA

Cultural,Wildlife

Lake Turkana, often referred to as the "Jade Sea" is one of the most remarkable destinations in northern Kenya. It is a place where history, culture, and nature converge in a way that is both ancient and breathtakingly beautiful. This remote region offers a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant life of indigenous communities who have lived alongside the lake and its surrounding deserts for centuries.

As you journey through this stunning area, you'll encounter the Gabra and Rendille nomads, whose lives are shaped by the arid beauty of the Chalbi Desert. These communities maintain traditional pastoral lifestyles, raising camels and goats, and are deeply connected to the rhythms of the land. Their body adornments—elaborate necklaces, earrings, and face paint—tell powerful stories of identity, kinship, and the passage of time.

In the Samburu, you will meet a community that remains rich in tradition and resilience. Known for their brightly colored beads, intricate jewelry, and elaborate hairstyles, the Samburu are closely related to the Maasai and share many cultural similarities.

The Pokot people, offer a vivid glimpse into the intricate craftsmanship that marks their culture. Known for their elaborate body art and deep-rooted beliefs, the Pokot are a group that values community and has a long history of cattle herding and farming.

Finally, the journey culminates at Samburu National Reserve a stunning conservation area where you can experience the diverse wildlife and vast landscapes that make this part of Kenya truly magical.

This journey to Lake Turkana is an immersion into the living heritage of northern Kenya. It’s an opportunity to connect with the communities, learn their stories, and witness a way of life that is as timeless as the land itself. Whether through art, clothing, or the oral traditions passed down through generations, every moment is a chance to understand and celebrate the rich diversity of Kenyan culture.

Practical information

Best time to travel to Kenya

June to October and January to February are the driest months with the least rainfall, more practical for safaris or camping. The average maximum temperatures are between 20 and 28 degrees celsius and the minimum temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees celsius in much of the country. The rainy season can be estimated from mid-September to November and from March to May, although the patterns vary according to the region.

Health – Vaccines

It is mandatory to have an official yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Kenya, and it is also advisable (but not mandatory) to vaccinate against typhoid fever.
You must also bring pills against malaria.

Visas

A visa is required to enter the country and can only be obtained online (www.evisa.go.ke). East Africa visa or single entry Kenya Visa. A valid passport with at least six months' validity from the date of entry into the country is required.

Currency

The currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES). As a guide, 1 USD is usually equivalent to about 130.15 KES. 10,000 KES is about $76.85. It is preferable to exchange euros or dollars upon arrival at the airport or exchange offices. In larger cities, there are ATMs and, in most main accommodations, it is possible to pay by credit card.

Language

There are two official languages in Kenya: English and Swahili (Kiswahili). Many different languages are spoken across the country as each population has its own dialect. The most common are Kikuyu, Dholuo and Kamba. Sheng, a Swahili-based slang mixed with English is widely spoken in Nairobi.

Electricity

To plug in any device, we will need a three-pin adapter, like in the United Kingdom. The voltage is 220V – 240V. The adapter should have several outputs if we plan to charge more than one device at a time. They are easily obtainable online.
