[PUMUA]

Pumua means “to breathe” in Swahili, the main language of Lamu It is used in the Swahili community to refer to breath, take a breath, exhale, rest…

It is more than a physical action, it is a call to create space to breathe consciously and to connect with the deep calm living within you.

The Pumua Retreat invites you on a transformative journey where you’ll attune to nature’s purest rhythms and rediscover the stillness within. Set on the enchanting island of Lamu, this retreat blends the tranquility of oceanfront yoga with the thrill of an unforgettable safari adventure, a perfect harmony of inner and outer exploration.

Lamu…where time stands still and the soul breathes…

Lamu is a magical corner of Africa.

A peaceful island steeped in history, where traditions are alive and culture flows through every street. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lamu is embraced by mangroves, where we will sail aboard the timeless wooden dhows. On the island, the only rule is “pole pole”— slowly, gently, calmly. Life follows with the rhythm of the tides and the unhurried steps of donkeys. We will wander along stone-paved alleys, witness how donkeys still carry the heartbeat of daily life, and be welcomed by a community eager to share the beauty of their way of living.

Practical information

Best time to travel to Kenya

June to October and January to February are the driest months with the least rainfall, more practical for safaris or camping. The average maximum temperatures are between 20 and 28 degrees celsius and the minimum temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees celsius in much of the country. The rainy season can be estimated from mid-September to November and from March to May, although the patterns vary according to the region.

Health – Vaccines

It is mandatory to have an official yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Kenya, and it is also advisable (but not mandatory) to vaccinate against typhoid fever.
You must also bring pills against malaria.

Visas

A visa is required to enter the country and can only be obtained online (www.evisa.go.ke). East Africa visa or single entry Kenya Visa. A valid passport with at least six months' validity from the date of entry into the country is required.

Currency

The currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES). As a guide, 1 USD is usually equivalent to about 130.15 KES. 10,000 KES is about $76.85. It is preferable to exchange euros or dollars upon arrival at the airport or exchange offices. In larger cities, there are ATMs and, in most main accommodations, it is possible to pay by credit card.

Language

There are two official languages in Kenya: English and Swahili (Kiswahili). Many different languages are spoken across the country as each population has its own dialect. The most common are Kikuyu, Dholuo and Kamba. Sheng, a Swahili-based slang mixed with English is widely spoken in Nairobi.

Electricity

To plug in any device, we will need a three-pin adapter, like in the United Kingdom. The voltage is 220V – 240V. The adapter should have several outputs if we plan to charge more than one device at a time. They are easily obtainable online.
