Uganda, also known as "The Pearl of Africa", is a country located in the Great Lakes region. Uganda is home to, among other wonders, the mythical sources of the White Nile that originate from Lake Victoria.

Our route begins by traveling towards the west of the country, to first reach Kibale Forest National Park, one of the most important chimpanzee reserves on the continent.

We will continue west to the Crater Lakes region to stay some days with the children at Kumwenya School, run by a Spanish NGO, working to empower and support local communities through educational and development projects in Uganda.

You will have the opportunity to interact directly with the children and staff of Kumwenya, teaching, photographing and enjoying the hospitality of the children and community members.

You will be able to share your knowledge and stories, organize various activities, engage in sports, arts, helping to enhance the students’ learning experiences.

Through participating in their daily lives, you will create meaningful connections and a lasting impact.

We will make day trips to visit tea plantations, local markets, participate in artisanal workshops and make an overnight trip to Queen Elizabeth National Park for a safari, where you can closely admire the fascinating African wildlife in its natural habitat.

On our way back to Entebbe, we will spend an afternoon enjoying a unique experience of walking safari at Lake Emburo National Park, where you can encounter giraffes, zebras and hippos and touch, feel and smell the environment, that wildlife inhabits.

Practical information

Best time to travel to Uganda and Kenya

July to September and December to February are the driest months with the least rainfall, more practical for safaris or camping. The average maximum temperatures are between 20 and 28 degrees celsius and the minimum temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees celsius in much of the country. The rainy season can be estimated from mid-September to November and from March to May, although the patterns vary according to the region.

Health – Vaccines

It is mandatory to have an official yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Uganda, and it is also advisable (but not mandatory) to vaccinate against typhoid fever.
You must also bring pills against malaria.

Visas

East Africa visa or single entry Uganda Visa: The single entry visa costs $50 per person, East Africa visa costs $100 per person. East Africa visa allows entry into three countries: Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda (it is issued by the country you arrive at on the international flight but is valid for visiting all three). Visa must be obtained online at https://visas.immigration.go.ug and usually takes from a few hours to several days.

Currency

The currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). As a guide, 1 USD is usually equivalent to about 3,665 UGX. 10,000 UGX is about $2.7 and 100,000 UGX is about $27.28 . It is preferable to exchange euros or dollars upon arrival at the airport or exchange offices. In larger cities, there are ATMs and, in most main accommodations, it is possible to pay by credit card.

Language

Uganda is an English-speaking country and almost everyone speaks (or gets by) in English. Amongst more than 30 indigenous languages, the main one, and the most widely spoken in the Entebbe and Kampala areas, is Luganda. In addition, Swahili is quite widespread, a language spoken by millions of East African speakers and used as a lingua franca in the Great Lakes region due to its proximity to Kenya and Tanzania, where it is the national language and native to the Indian Ocean coast.

Electricity

To plug in any device, we will need a three-pin adapter, like in the United Kingdom. The voltage is 220V – 240V. The adapter should have several outputs if we plan to charge more than one device at a time. They are easily obtainable online.
